2011 $10 Fine Silver Coin - Boreal Forest

2011 $10 Fine Silver Coin – Boreal Forest Issued by the Canadian Mint. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. This is a good time to reflect on the significant role the wilderness plays in reducing global warming and preserving the Earth’s environmental balance. Canada’s own boreal forest is the world’s largest ecosystem, a habitat that covers roughly 58% of our country’s massive landmass. Some 15% of our total population-including 80% of members of Canada’s First Nations- live within the boreal forest. Three billion birds flock to the boreal forest every year to breed and fledge their young. It is also home to dozens of mammal, hundreds of fish, thousands of plant, and tens of thousands of insect species. The soil absorbs and holds more carbon per hectare than any other ecosystem in the world. By keeping carbon dioxide, a harmful greenhouse gas, from escaping into the atmosphere, our boreal forest is helping to manage negative environmental impacts on a global scale, and preserving habitats for living beings everywhere. The coin is certified to be 99.99% pure silver with a mintage of 10,000 coins.

2011 $10 Fine Silver Coin - Highway of Heroes

2011 $10 Fine Silver Coin – Highway of Heroes Coin Issued by the Canadian Mint. Crowds gather, many waving Canadian flags, for a solemn occasion on the Cranberry Road Bridge in Fort Hope, Ontario. Below the bridge runs the Macdonald- Cartier freeway, known as the “401″. Slowly, a convey of cars approaches, and then a hearse carrying another fallen Canadian soldier from overseas passes by on it’s way to Toronto. Whenever fallen Canadian soldiers are returned to the Canadian forces base in Trenton, Ontario this scene plays itself along highway 401. For this reason the stretch of road has become known as ‘the Highway of Heroes”. Buy the Highway of Heroes commemorative coin today and support the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial and the Military Families Fund. For every Highway of Heroes commemorative coin sold, $20 will be donated by the Canadian Mint and shared between both charities.

2011 $10 Fine Silver Coin - Orca Whale

2011 $10 Fine Silver Coin – Orca Whale Issued by the Canadian Mint. Arguably the most well-known representations of Orcas have been derived from traditions and culture of west coast First Nations communities including the Haida, Tlingit, and Kwakwaka wakw.
Orca Whales, the largest members of the dolphin family, are among the cleverest mammals on earth; they hunt fish, seals, squid, turtles, birds, other whales, in pods of up to three dozen individuals. Orca Whales possess an ability to learn new things during their lifetimes and pass these teachings on to the next generation. Despite their power and intelligence, these creatures remain susceptible to encroachment on their habitat, and pollution levels in the oceans. While the Orca Whale was established long ago as a Canadian icon, their vulnerability to our actions should serve as a reminder of our roles as the stewards of their surroundings. Coin certified to be 99.99% pure silver with a mintage of 10,000 coins.

2011 25 Cents Coloured Memphre' Canadian Mythical Creatures Coin

2011 25 Cents Coloured Canadian Mythical Creatures – Memphre’ Coin. Issued by the Canadian Mint. About 150 kms. southeast of Montreal lies the deeep black waters of Lake Memphremagog, and maybe a long kept legend. A large aquatic creature measuring over 6 meters was first sighted there in 1816. Subsequent regular sightings describe the creature as having 4 humps on its black or green eel-like back and a block-shaped head. The creature, some say, can swim as fast as a speed boat. The creature has become known as the Memphre’. The description of the Memphre’ sounds similar to that of Ogopogo in British Columbia’s Lake Okanagan. So scientists believe there may be a species of water animal that has yet to be discovered. Fact or fiction ?

2011 25 Cents Coloured Mishepishu Canadian Mythical Creatures Coin

2011 25 Cent Coloured Mishepishu Canadian Mythical Creatures Coin issued by the Canadian Mint. Third coin in the Canadian Mythical Creatures Set. Mishepishu, whose name comes from the Algonquin Ojibwe word meaning “Great Water Lynx” or “Underwater Panther”, is described as a huge lynx with horns on his head, a scaly, dragon-like body and the tail of a fish. A shape-shifting Native American spirit, this water-dwelling feline is said to live in the bottom of Lake Superior, Lake Ontario, and possibly other Great Lakes as well. Mishepishu is said to protect the copper and other metals found in the rocks throughout the region. Legend says that its horns are made of copper. Mishipeshu is reputed to be the source for the sudden, and extremely dangerous storms that erupt on the Great Lakes – warnings from this Water Spirit that one has gotten too close to his treasures! Mining copper in its environs was taboo, and forbidden by the Ojibwa tribe. It was even worse to take it from the Great Lynx’s home, Michipicoten Island – this was considered to be stealing from Mishipeshu himself. Coin made of nickel plated steel.

In Asia he is called Yeti, in the Western United States he is called Bigfoot and in the mountain forests of British Columbia, Yukon, and Northern Ontario he is known as Sasquatch. Is the legend of the Sasquatch merely a mistaken identity of a bear standing on it’s hind legs, or is the sasquatch a missing link to the ancestry of man ? So far, no one knows for sure as one has never been caught, or the remains of one found. But until then, the legend lives on with reports of sightings and the finding of large footprints used as evidence. The coin is made of nickel plated steel.

2011 50 Cent Coin - Gifts From Santa Lenticular

2011 50 Cent Coin – Gifts From Santa Lenticular Coin. The fifth coin in the annual holiday lenticular series issued by the Canadian Mint. Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, or simply “Santa”, is a figure with legendary, historical and folkloric aspects who is said to bring gifts to the homes of good children on Christmas Eve, December 24. Modern Santa Claus was derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which, in turn, may have part of its basis in tales concerning the gift giver Saint Nicholas. Santa Claus is generally depicted as a plump, jolly, white-bearded man wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century significantly due to the influence of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. The North American depiction of Santa Claus as it developed in the 19th and 20th century in turn influenced the modern perceptions of Father Christmas, Sinterklaas and Saint Nicholas in European culture. According to a tradition which can be traced to the 1820s, Santa Claus lives at the North Pole, with a large number of magical elves, and nine (originally eight) flying reindeer. The elves are employed in his workshop to build toys, while the magical flying reindeer pull Santa’s sleigh on Christmas eve, as he delivers toys to good girls and boys around the world. The coin’s design depicts Santa as he points the globe to his next stop, and then tilt the coin to reveal Santa in his flying sleigh! It’s a sound every child hopes to hear—the clip clop of hooves on the roof signaling Santa is here. The coin is made of copper plated steel with color and lenticular effect.

2011 Special Edition Proof Set - 100th Anniversary of 1911 King George V Circulation Coins

2011 Speical Edition Proof Set – 100th Anniversary of 1911 King George V Circulation Coins. Issued by the Canadian Mint in July, 2011 and immediately sold out from their store.  The value of the set doubled as soon as the Mint sold out of this very collectable, and desireable set. The set features each general denomination coin that circulated in 1911. The dollar coin is a special case.  It was first struck as an experiment in 1911, but didn’t really enter general circulation until 1935, when it appeared as the iconic Voyageur Canoe silver dollar. The 1911 dollar is thus one of Canada’s rarest coins. Another point of interest is that the smaller denomination coins from 1911 were struck without  the words “Dei Gra” ( “By the Grace of God”, in Latin ) and have become known as the “godless coins”. The coins are housed in removable lenses and are protected in an elegant cherry wood case. Now in stock !

2011 Special Edition Proof Silver Dollar- 100th Anniversary of the 1911 Silver Dollar

2011 Special Edition Proof Silver Dollar- 100th Anniversary of the 1911 Dollar. Issued by the Canadian Mint.  The Mint began striking coins in 1908.  A one dollar coin was not yet in circulation, but desperately needed. So, in 1911 the Mint struck a trial dollar coin in lead while London’s Royal Mint struck two trial coins in silver. Brittain was responsible for preparing and distributing most of the master tooling to its dominions. However, a series of exceptional events delayed the introduction of a silver dollar to Canada until 1935 ! It then came out as the iconic Voyageur canoe design. The original dollar design of 1911 has become one of Canada’s rarest coins. The obverse side of the coin features the effigy of King George V with the words “Dei Gra” ( “By the Grace of God”, in Latin ).  The coin is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Petro Canada #12/15 25 Cents Special Moments Men's Hockey Team 2002 Collector Coin Card

From the Canadian Mint and Petro Canada, Collector Coin Cards. Set of 15 cards. This was the 12th issue in the Collector series: Canadian Special Moments : Men’s Hockey Team 2002 from the Salt Lake City Olympics. Team Canada won the gold medal with a 5-2 win over the Americans in the gold medal game. Joe Sakic scored the winning goal with 1:41  left to go in the second period. Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla scored their second goals of the game each with less than 4 minutes to go in the third period to ensure the victory. A lucly loonie had been imbedded at center ice by a Canadian ice maker. This was Canada’s first gold medal in hockey at the Olympics in 50 years. The 3 special moments coin cards are rarer and more valuable than the other coin cards for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Canadian Mint only made these coin cards especially for Petro Canada. They did not also sell them on their web site, as they did the other 12 coin cards. Secondly, the colored special moments coins had less mintage than the other coins used in the coin card collection. And in the case of the Men’s Hockey Team 2002 quarter, a further distinction. The colored version of the quarter with the last 2 had two varieties. A rare engraved version and even rarer “raised” 2 version. The Petro Canada Men’s Hockey Team 2002 coin cards features the engraved version of the coin.
