1996 $2 Piedfort Coin with 2 uncut 2 Dollar Replacement Bills with Serial Numbers beginning with BRX. Issued by the Canadian Mint. The “X” in BRX denotes that these are replacement bills for those that didn’t meet the hight quality standards of the Bank of Canada. Replacement bills are not generally used in circulation. The “Piedfort” $2 coin means that it is of double thickness as compared to regular toonies. This was the first Piedfort issued by the Canadian Mint. 1996 was also the year that the $2 bill was replaced with $2 bi-metallic coins witha polar bear design. 2000 Family of Polar Bears $2 Specimen Coin In Maple Wood Box. A small number of specimen $2 coins were issued by the Mint in a test-marketing program. These coins are individually packaged in a attractive Royal Canadian Mint maple wood box, with the design of the coin laser engraved into it. This was the only way these specimen $2 coins were issued. The original mintage was well under 5,000 coins.

2002 50 Cent Canada Coat of Arms Coin with Gold Plating on the Reverse Side Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This coin was not issued by the Canadian Mint with the gold plating but was done subsequently. The gold plating makes the coin very attractive and more collectable.

Gold-plated bronze 2002; A “Centre Ice” 22-karat gold-plated double loon dollar coin was issued by the Canadian Mint as part of a souvenir album, entitled “Going for Gold,” jointly offered by the Mint, Canada Post, and Maclean’s Magazine to commemorate the 2 Olympic gold medals for hockey won by Canadian teams in 2002. The “Centre Ice” term is an allusion to the fact that a $1 loon coin was imbedded into the ice by a Canadian Ice maker at the Salt Lake City Olympics.

2004 Sterling Silver Lucky Loonie. Issued by the Canadian Mint for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. The 11 sided coin features a common loon along with the painted logo of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Olympic rings on the reverse side. This is not the original condition of the coin issued by the Canadian Mint. The gold plating was subsequent. The gold accents make the coin very attractive, and well worth collecting.

2011 25 Cents Coloured Canadian Mythical Creatures – Memphre’ Coin. Issued by the Canadian Mint. About 150 kms. southeast of Montreal lies the deeep black waters of Lake Memphremagog, and maybe a long kept legend. A large aquatic creature measuring over 6 meters was first sighted there in 1816. Subsequent regular sightings describe the creature as having 4 humps on its black or green eel-like back and a block-shaped head. The creature, some say, can swim as fast as a speed boat.The creature has become known as the Memphre’. The description of the Memphre’ sounds similar to that of Ogopogo in British Columbia’s Lake Okanagan. So scientists believe there may be a species of water animal that has yet to be discovered. Fact or fiction ?

2011 25 Cent Coloured Mishepishu Canadian Mythical Creatures Coin issued by the Canadian Mint. Third coin in the Canadian Mythical Creatures Set. Mishepishu, whose name comes from the Algonquin Ojibwe word meaning “Great Water Lynx” or “Underwater Panther”, is described as a huge lynx with horns on his head, a scaly, dragon-like body and the tail of a fish. A shape-shifting Native American spirit, this water-dwelling feline is said to live in the bottom of Lake Superior, Lake Ontario, and possibly other Great Lakes as well. Mishepishu is said to protect the copper and other metals found in the rocks throughout the region. Legend says that its horns are made of copper. Mishipeshu is reputed to be the source for the sudden, and extremely dangerous storms that erupt on the Great Lakes – warnings from this Water Spirit that one has gotten too close to his treasures! Mining copper in its environs was taboo, and forbidden by the Ojibwa tribe. It was even worse to take it from the Great Lynx’s home, Michipicoten Island – this was considered to be stealing from Mishipeshu himself. Coin made of nickel plated steel.

Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, or simply “Santa”, is a figure with legendary, historical and folkloric aspects who is said to bring gifts to the homes of good children on Christmas Eve, December 24. Modern Santa Claus was derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which, in turn, may have part of its basis in tales concerning the gift giver Saint Nicholas. Santa Claus is generally depicted as a plump, jolly, white-bearded man wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century significantly due to the influence of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. The North American depiction of Santa Claus as it developed in the 19th and 20th century in turn influenced the modern perceptions of Father Christmas, Sinterklaas and Saint Nicholas in European culture. According to a tradition which can be traced to the 1820s, Santa Claus lives at the North Pole, with a large number of magical elves, and nine (originally eight) flying reindeer. The elves are employed in his workshop to build toys, while the magical flying reindeer pull Santa’s sleigh on Christmas eve, as he delivers toys to good girls and boys around the world. Team Canada won the gold medal with a 5-2 win over the Americans in the gold medal game. Joe Sakic scored the winning goal with 1:41  left to go in the second period. Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla scored their second goals of the game each with less than 4 minutes to go in the third period to ensure the victory. A lucly loonie had been imbedded at center ice by a Canadian ice maker. This was Canada’s first gold medal in hockey at the Olympics in 50 years. The 3 special moments coin cards are rarer and more valuable than the other coin cards for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Canadian Mint only made these coin cards especially for Petro Canada. They did not also sell them on their web site, as they did the other 12 coin cards. Secondly, the colored special moments coins had less mintage than the other coins used in the coin card collection. And in the case of the Men’s Hockey Team 2002 quarter, a further distinction. The colored version of the quarter with the last 2 had two varieties. A rare engraved version and even rarer “raised” 2 version. The Petro Canada Men’s Hockey Team 2002 coin cards features the engraved version of the coin.

This was the 13th issue in the Collector series: Canadian Special Moments :25 Cent  Woman’s Ice Hockey Team form the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics. Canada beat its main rival the USA by a score of 3-2 in the Gold Medal game to win Canada’s first ever Olympic Gold medal in woman’s ice hockey. The first woman’s ice hockey gold medal went to the United States in 1998. Canada won silver that year so wanted to exact their revenge against the U.S.  Jayna Hefford got the gold medal winning goal for Canada with one second to go in the second period for a 3-1 lead. Earlier that period Haley Wickenheiser ( the tournament’s MVP with 7 goals and 10 points ) scored Canada’s second goal. Canada held off the Americans late charge in the third period to win 3-2. On the backs of the cards is information on how Canada has faired at that specific sport in the Winter Olympics. Note: The Alpine Skiing quarter came out in 2007, but in some of the Petro Canada coin cards the date on the back of the coin is 2008. This mistake, known as a “Mule” makes the coin card more valuable. After a while the mistake was discovered and the coins recalled, but there are still a number of “Mule” coin cards out there. All of these coin cards for sale are correctly dated 2007.
